First and Foremost
- DO NOT PICK, SCRATCH OR PLAY WITH YOUR TATTOO!
- Until it heals, your tattoo is a fresh wound and should be treated as such. Leave your bandage on for the next three hours. Expect the skin around your tattoo to be red and tender for the next few days. As the tattoo heals, a scab may form over it; this is normal. After the scabbing occurs, the area will itch slightly. This is also a sign of healing, and it is completely normal. It is very important that you do not scratch the tattoo, if the irritation is uncomfortable, apply lotion or gently pat the area. Healing time averages between one to five weeks.
How to clean your Tattoo
- Wash your hands (with anti bacterial soap) before you touch the tattoo.
- When you take the bandage off for the first time, gently hand-wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly. Blot dry with a clean towel, and spread a thin layer of A&D ointment over the area. You do not need to re-bandage.
- For the first two to three days spread a thin layer of A&D ointment over your tattoo three to four times a day.
- After the first few days, switch to an unscented lotion (Lubriderm or Curel) to keep from drying out the tattoo.
- REMEMBER: The more you take care of your tattoo, the better it will heal.
Important Healing Tips
- Do not expose your new tattoo to tanning beds or direct sunlight. After the tattoo is healed, apply sun block (SPF 30 or higher) any time your tattoo will be exposed to the sun.
- Do not go in hot tubs, saunas, swimming pools, lakes, or hot baths for at least three weeks after getting your tattoo. For general bathing, showers are best; try to keep the tattooed area out of water as much as possible.
- Do not use Neosporin, hydrogen peroxide, scented lotion, or alcohol on your tattoo.
Consult a health care professional at first sign of infection!
